There is truly no shortage of hair loss causes. Everything from aging, emotional stress, physical trauma, illness, medication, hormonal imbalance, and just plain rotten genetic luck can play adverse roles in the health of your hair. And while not all of these can be treated once significant hair loss has occurred, many of them can be prevented.

It is said that prevention is the best medicine. In the case of hair loss, this simply couldn’t be any more accurate. The good news is that a little education on this subject can go a long way. Another practical step you can take is to actually take care of your hair while you’ve got it. What a concept, right? This simply means that you reduce the amount of chemicals you use while styling your hair, avoid tight ponytails and braids as much as possible, and treat your hair to natural, vitamin-infused shampoos, conditioners, and oils. Taking care of your hair directly is just as powerful and important as it sounds!

You may also wish to supplement your diet with a multivitamin and omega 3 fatty acids. These things can keep your skin and hair in balance. Many of the foods we eat have been depleted of much of their nutritional value. As such, it is very important that we ensure our bodies are being taken care of. Supplementation can allow for this.

Finally, take a look at any medications you happen to be on. This includes contraceptives. Certain pharmaceuticals can wreak havoc on your hormones. This can cause a whole slew of health challenges, not the least of which is hair loss. If you’ve recently started a new medication, or your dosage has been changed… and you’ve noticed your hair getting thinner… then by all means, have a chat with your doctor right away! The two of you may be able to work together to ensure that you keep your hair while still receiving the benefits of the medicine.

Adhering to this advice can save you a whole lot of mental, emotional, and social stress. You will be far more likely to maintain an appearance that you’re happy with.
